Coaches for Sports

We welcome enthusiastic parent volunteers as coaches for our children's soccer and baseball programs. Sport experience is not necessary, but a positive and patient attitude is!  Volunteer coaches work beside MPCC staff to help practices and games run smoothly.  Sometimes that means tying a shoe for a 4 year old, or giving a pep-talk to an 8 year old novice, or helping chase down those run away balls.  We guarantee that volunteering will brighten your day because you will have made a difference to a child.  Volunteer!

Rink Volunteers

The Manor Park rinks, located adjacent to the Manor Park Community Centre, are built and maintained by MPCC rink staff. However, it is the help of volunteers to shovel and scrape the ice that keeps the ice surfaces in top shape.  Volunteers are needed to lift a shovel – at any time – but most of all following a heavy snowfall.

Volunteers are a key part of the Ottawa Marathon Race Weekend! You can be part of the action – right here in Manor Park – by volunteering to help at the ‘Hydration Station’ location on Birch Avenue. Each year, it takes over 50 volunteers to fill and serve 20,000 cups of water or electrolyte replacement. And – it’s fun!

Good to know:  Volunteers must be 10 years or older. Volunteers should review the training information provided to them via email. On marathon Sunday, volunteers should be prepared to arrive at 6am and remain until the last walker / runner passes the station around noon. Work will include preparing and serving water and electrolyte replacement; and clean-up.  Some lifting is required. Volunteers should dress for the weather in comfortable clothing and shoes. Volunteers are advised to leave their valuables at home as there is no space to secure them on site. Washrooms are limited to porta-potties supplied for the event. No previous volunteering experience is necessary. Volunteer by getting in touch through mpcc@manorpark.ca. Volunteering at this event is inspirational!

MANOR PARK RINK: snow clearing

The Manor Park outdoor rinks are some of the largest outdoor ice surfaces in the city! The night-lit and boarded hockey rink is surrounded by a skating oval and pleasure puddle. And because of volunteer support, the Manor Park outdoor rinks have some of the best quality ice surfaces in the city too!

Volunteers are needed to shovel snow and scrape the ice daily. Both of these tasks must be completed before the rink maintenance staff can flood the ice. Shovels are available at the rink, and volunteers are invited to ‘just do it!'.

Good to know:  Volunteers of all ages are welcomed. Those volunteering for high school hours must arrange their schedule with the rink staff. Neither skates nor skating experience are necessary. Weather permitting, rinks are operational in January and February. At times, there may be no access to warm shelter at the rink so volunteers should be dress warmly for the weather. Volunteers are NOT permitted to operate motorized snow removal equipment – even though it looks like it would be so much fun. Volunteering at the rink is a great way to up that fitness level!

SKATING PARTY

On the first Saturday evening of February, Manor Park gathers at the rink for the annual Skating Party and Chili Cook-off.  Residents of all ages enjoy skating, music, the warmth of a bonfire, food and drink, twinkling lights … and the friendship of neighbours.

Volunteers are needed to serve food and drinks, tend the bonfire, and clean up following the event.

Good to know:  Volunteers of all ages are welcomed from 4pm until 8pm on the day of the event. Volunteers should present themselves at the Manor Park Community Centre. Warm clothing appropriate to the weather is required.

ROCK THE BLOCK

‘Rock the Block’ is the biggest community event of the year! It takes place on the first Friday following Labour Day weekend on the sports fields adjacent to the Manor Park Community Centre. Families gather at 6pm for food, community displays and activities. Favourite activities include glitter tattoos and games on the sports fields. At 8pm, everyone settles down to enjoy an outdoor movie along with popcorn and a drink.

Volunteers are needed from 3pm - 8pm on the day of the event for setting up which includes moving tables and chairs, erecting pop-up tents, moving picnic tables, and hanging the outdoor movie screen. Of course, at the end of the evening all the set-up becomes clean-up! Anyone with an artistic flair would enjoy working at the glitter tattoo table. The most popular spot is at the popcorn and candy floss stand – and where a volunteer’s contribution really stands out.

Good to know:  Volunteers are asked to pre-register via email at volunteer@manorpark.ca so that they can be scheduled at the time and activity of their choice. Volunteering may involve lifting – but all volunteers must be prepared to work while standing. At the popcorn concession, instructions for hygiene must be adhered to.
